Pauliina Fred - flute

PAULIINA FRED (born 1974) began her musical training at the Kirkkonummi Music School in 1982, choosing both the recorder and flute. An interest in early music was developed at a summer course, and led her to purchase her first traverse flute.

In 1994, Fred began her professional studies in the soloist programme of the Sibelius Academy, with recorder as her main subject. Fred graduated as a teacher of the recorder, however in 1999 her main instrument changed to traverse flute.

Her teachers have included Rabbe Forsman (recorder), Jari S. Puhakka and Mikael Helasvuo (traverse flute), and Liisa Ruoho (flute). In Spring 2001 Fred graduated as a Master of Music.

In 1997-1999, Pauliina Fred lived in the Netherlands and studied traverse flute and recorder at the Utrecht and Amsterdam Conservatories under the supervision of Wilbert Hazelzet, Jed Wentz and Paul Leenhouts. She graduated as a traverse flute teacher from Utrecht Conservatory in June 1999, however she continued to study in the soloist programme at the Conservatory, making frequent trips to the Netherlands.

In 2001 Fred received her soloist diploma under Wilbert Hazelzet’s direction. She has also taken part in the various master classes of Konrad Hünteler, Barthold Kuijken and Marten Root.

Pauliina Fred plays in the Opus-X ensemble, the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, and the 6th Floor Orchestra. Fred is an active chamber musician and plays in a range of different ensembles, eg. the Candela Duo and the Volante Quartet.

Fred has appeared at numerous festivals in Finland, and performed as a chamber musician and soloist in Estonia, Latvia, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, France, the Komi Republic (Russia), and the USA.
