RinneRadio offers fearless forays into an eclectic and broadly jazz-based musical world. Saxes, samplers and synthesizers are the foundation for the band's musical mix from hip-hop to Lapp yoik chant. Despite the multiplexity, RinneRadio has never lost its musical thread. In fact, it has just steamed straight ahead and further developed its musical output: techno, ethno, jazz, rock and other elements are more tightly interwoven than ever before. The result is visionary music of international proportions that defies all attempts at classification. Up on stage, be it at a rock, jazz or ethno festival, the carefully devised visual presentation further demonstrates that this is a band unlike any other.
The band's CD single "In Nera / Amen / Kala" includes three so-called ambient dance tracks which form a musical unity. These tracks were recorded during the sessions of the new album "Unik", but did not fit into the final album concept, and therefore the band decided to release these tracks as a separate CD. Compared with the typical ambient dance music RinneRadio offers a rare combination of sophisticated programming, top quality musicianship and improvisation.
The latest album "Unik" was released in Finland in March 1994. It received rave reviews in all major media. It was album of the week at Radio City in Helsinki. National music channel picked up the track "Saloma" to their play list and "Teo Teo" has also been getting a lot of air play. The release of the CD was followed by selected gigs, including the Brussels Film Festival in Belgium.
In the Summer of 1994 RinneRadio played at all major festivals in Finland, including Turku Ruisrock and a Warehouse party gig during Pori Jazz. Always experimental, the band used quadraphonic sound at the Kaivopuisto free park concert at Helsinki Festival and as they played in daylight, special light effects were created by using large mirrors. In August RinneRadio played a very special gig at ISEA
(International Symposium of Electronic Art) happening at Vanha in Helsinki. The band played in the main room and another mix was created simultaneously by a DJ in the club room. Real time videos were also used and manipulated. English CD ROM producers attending ISEA were impressed by the band's performance, and they invited RinneRadio to join the "Virtual Nightclub" CD-ROM project.
In September 1994 RinneRadio played their first gig in Spain at BAM festival in Barcelona and in November they performed at the Tallinn Jazzkaar festival in Estonia. Apart from playing at the main concert with Joe Zawinul RinneRadio also performed at a dance rave in Tallinn's Art Institute.
1995 was another great year for RinneRadio. In January Kajasto produced a video for the track "Teo Teo". In February RinneRadio received the Finnish "Emma" Award (an equivalent of Grammy) for The Jazz Band Of The Year. In late February the band toured Sweden with Sami yoik singer Wimme, whose first solo album Tapani Rinne produced, and in June the band played successfully in Germany and Denmark. In the Summer the band started working on tracks for their forthcoming album and did some special gigs including Viitasaari New Music Festival,
Tammerfest in Tampere and Helsinki Festival. In August they performed four Fridays in a row at Zoo Club in Helsinki, joined by different top DJ's for each show. The experiments with DJ's joining in for scratching and adding rhytms have succesfully continued, and RinneRadio has become a very hip band to dance to. The band's gig at Music & Media Festival in Tampere in October received enthusiastic reviews in a.o. Melody Maker. In November 1995 RinneRadio released a new live single and played in Tokyo.
In January 1996 the band played at Midem in France and in March Rinneradio played in U.S.A. and Canada. They played very succesfully at The Knitting Factory in New York, SXSW in Austin and Canadian Music Week in Toronto. The new studio album called "Rok" was released in Finland on February 10th. The release of the CD was celebrated with a sold out show at the biggest club in Helsinki, Vanha. More than 1000 people witnessed RinneRadio's rise from cult status to mainstream popularity. On February 18th "Rok" entered the official Finnish Top 40 at 26 and has stayed there now for six weeks, peaking at 22.
NEW RinneRadio's new CD "Pfft" Rockadillo Records ZENCD 2054 Somewhere between jazz and electronic dance music there lies a vast grey area. Over there you can find three gentlemen in overalls at work. They are RinneRadio. During the 90's no other Finnish artist has crossed the musical boundaries as easily. House beat, modern jazz, drum & bass breakbeats and ethnic vocal lines are all perfect fuel for RinneRadio.
"Live remixes" are just RinneRadio's another wild idea. During the last few years the group has performed several times in the main room of Vanha club in Helsinki with dj:s making simultaneous remix versions of the songs in the bar. Adventurous clubbers could choose between live concert or stripped-down techno remix. Or maybe the most exciting thing was to place yourself in the middle and listen to both versions.
Now this unique production is available on record as well. Let me take you back to March 1995. It's the opening club of ARS-95 art exhibition and you are in the bar. Behind the desk is Ø aka Mika Vainio.
In the mid-90´s Vainio has been recognized internationally as a master of arctic minimalism. Ø's 12-inches on Helsinki-based Sähkö label are classics. Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen are Panasonic, a duo with stomach-shaking bass frequencies and ice clear bleeps. Another team of fearless Finnish explorers, that is. "Pfft" is not an official follow-up to the highly succesful studio album "Rok", released in 1996. "Pfft" is released as a limited edition CD, which shows that it is clearly an underground side project that adds another dimension to RinneRadio's adventurous career.
