Weather

Here you can see the current weather conditions at the moment in Helsinki, Finland.
As regards temperature, Finland is more favoured than most countries in the same latitudes. The Great Lakes of America, for example, have exactly the same mean temperature for the coldest months as Finland does. In July southern Finland is as warm as England, Holland and Belgium. Owing to the dry climate, it always feels warmer than the thermometer indicates around the year. During the summer there is less rain than in the countries mentioned. Southern Finland enjoys actual sunshine for more than half the period.

Winter darkness...
Since northernmost Finland is above the Arctic Circle, it enjoys a spell of polar night (called kaamos) when the sun does not rise. In Utsjoki this period lasts for nearly two months. In winter the days are short all over Finland and the sun is very low on the horizon even at midday. The days are not as dark as the nights but blue and grey. The local people call this twilight the blue moment. By mid-April the sun is above the horizon for 14 to 15 hours in southern Finland and 16 hours in northern Finland.

... and the midnight sun
Around Midsummer in northern Finland, the sun does not set for several weeks. In Utsjoki this longest summer day lasts for over two months. Even in more southern places, the night does not get dark at all, the days being separated by a couple of hours of twilight.

During the festival, in August, the sun shines almost 17 hours a day and the average temperature is statistically 19.2 C or 66.6 F. Because of the mild temperature and the long and light summer nights, the summer is the most favorable time for foreigners to visit Finland.
