Antti Rissanen

Antti Rissanen (b.1975) is one of the few jazz trombonists in Europe, who works internationally as a soloist with big band music of his own. He is a long time student of Conrad Herwig and Jiggs Whigham via The New School University and Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik Berlin, from where he graduated with top honours. From Sibelius-Academy's Jazz Music Department he graduated in 2001.He started playing the piano at age of six and improvising and composing at age of seven. After played eumphonium, he changed to trombone at age of 14. His international career took off after winning the second prize in Frankfurt radio's Big Band composing contest in 1995 in Germany. ITA’s Frank Rosolino competition he won in 1998. He also got the first price at the "Rich Matteson" Jazz Competition at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Lahti Finland in 2001. Last year he was chosen the brass player of the year 2002 by the Lieksa Brass Week.

widely around Europe, much in Austria and Germany, among others UMO Jazz
Orchestra, Bundes Jazz Orchestra, RIAS Big Band, Upper Austrian Jazz
Orchestra, The Charles Mingus Big Band, NDR Big Band, MI22 and Police
Big Band Tallinn. Recently he has worked with Randy Brecker, Jack Walrath, Ingrid
Jensen, Peter Herbolzheimer, Ted Trimble and Gene Calderazzo.
As a leader, he has recorded two CDs with his group
Mr Fonebone, which consists of award winning yourger generation players
of Finnish jazz scene. The most recent CD "Mr Fonebone Live"
(TEXCD 3000) features trumpet player Ingrid Jensen. Mr. Rissanen also teaches at the
Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki and at the Music Institute of Imatra
as well as conducts a Helsinki-based Settlemen Big Band. At the moment
Rissanen also makes research for the Sibelius-Academy for the doctorate,
majoring in the subject of lipbreak articulations. |
