The New Trombone Collective

Introduction

The New Trombone Collective consists of nine trombonists from the same generation, whom studied at the Conservatory of Rotterdam and stayed friends after finishing their study. They all built up a successful career with renowned orchestras and ensembles, like the Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest, the Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest, Orkest de Volharding and Het Nederlands Blazers Ensemble. Together with the friendship, also the urge to play and work together stayed among them. This is why they established the ‘New Trombone Collective’(NTC).

Goal of the ensemble

The goal of the NTC is the further emancipation of the trombone in solo- and chambermusic. This instrument has very strongly the image of an orchestral instrument and therefore not many people know the strength of the instrument in solo- and chamber music. Another problem is the limited repertoire for trombone in chamber music. Therefore the NTC is motivating composers to expand the repertoire.

All the members of the NTC are very active in the Dutch music world and because of this they have a lot of knowledge of, and experience in performing both classical and ‘new’ music. With the help of this knowledge and experience the NTC wants to reach its goal; finding new manners, going from the historical development of the trombone, to explore the technical and musical possibilities of the trombonist and the trombone in general.

Working-method

By the means of variable strengths – for example working together with different ensembles -, new compositions and new ways of presenting concerts the NTC wants to show its audience the surprising possibilities of the trombone in al its aspects.

The NTC is a collective established by its own musicians and from a strong involvement they decide their selves what’s happening. The ensemble is a workshop where every member can bring up and execute artistic ideas, for which might be less room in the daily music practice.

The involvement of the ensemble members also shows in the close cooperation with composers. The NTC wants to be involved in process of composing in an early stage. This way the collective is able to develop together with the composers and to bring up new ideas and new aspects of the trombone into the music practice.
