Mikko Franck

Mikko Frank began playing the violin at the age of five and embarked on his conducting studies in 1995, at first privately with Jorma Panula and in 1996-98 in the Sibelius Academy conducting class. Still only 23 years old, he has rapidly established himself as one of the most exciting new talents on the international scene, building up a wide range of repertoire both with symphony orchestras and in the opera house. He now regularly conducts the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic. Since 1997 he has been engaged by many European orchestras and made his US debut at the Aspen Festival in 1998. At the start of the 2002-03 season he will be taking up the post of Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Orchestre National de Belgique. His forthcoming engagements also include appearances in Toronto and Washington, with the London Symphony, RAI Turin, the Deutsche Opera Berlin and the Israel Philharmonic. Mr. Franck is very dedicated to including a substantial opera commitment in his schedule and has in recent seasons conducted The Magic Flute, L'elisir d'amore, Don Giovanni and La Boheme at the Finnish National Opera, La Traviata at the Norwegian Opera and a new production of Carmen at the Royal Opera Stockholm. In 2003 he will conduct the world premiere of Rasputin, the new opera by Einojuhani Rautavaara.

His recording of Sibelius' En Saga and Lemminkäinen Legends with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra was recently nominated for a Grammy Award.
