ITEC 2001 composers

 Harri Vuori

Harri Vuori

Harri Vuori (b. Lahti, January 10, 1957) studied composition with Paavo Heininen, Eero Hämeenniemi and Einojuhani Rautavaara at the Sibelius Academy from 1978 to 1989. Having graduated, he went on a study trip to Paris (1989-90). Since 1993, he has held the post of lecturer in music theory at the Department of Musicology of the University of Helsinki.

His work Kri (1988) received second prize in the Nordic Music -89 composition competition in Gothenburg. His orchestral work S-Wüt (1991) won the composition competition for the 75th anniversary year of Finland's independence in 1992. Since 1997, Vuori has been composer in residence with the Hyvinkää Orchestra.

 Edward Vesala

Edward Wesala

Edward Wesala (born 12.2.1945), composer improvisor, band leader, drummer, is one of the most tenaciously original musicians in europe, and his recordings with his ensemble Sound & Fury have alerted critics around the world to the fact that he is the most independent voice in Finnish jazz. "Jazz", nonetheless, is a inadequate description of his work.

All of Vesala's writing - through all the idioms he has traversed - bears his unmistakable signature. It has ever been so with the masters. A fragment of melody, a couple of passes at a splash cymbal, and one recoqnizes his touch immediately.

Vesala will bring his new composition for 500 tubas to ITEC 2001.

 Torstein
 Aagaard-Nilsen

Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen (1964), studied at the University of Bergen and the Bergen Conservatory of Music with Mogens Christensen among others. His work list shows a versatile production, where his close co-operation with amateurs has its natural place. One could mention his Concerto for Cornet and Brass Band (1993) commissioned and premiered by Manger Musikklag, Seid (1995), the obligatory piece in the European Championship fro Brass Bands in 1996 and Concerto for Cello and Orchestra (1995-6) commissioned by the Norwegian Association of School Orchestras and premiered by Aage Kalbein and Bergen Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Of more recent works should be mentioned his Concerto for Trumpet and Strings composed for Ole Edvard Antonsen and Bergen Chamber Orchestra, Fabula I and Fabula II (1996) for the BIT 20 Ensemble, Sinfonietta (1996-7), commissioned by BIT 20 and Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra (1997).
