Twisted Steel is made up of past and present members of the University of Southern Mississippi tuba and euphonium studio, under the tutelage of Thomas Stein. The quartet was formed in 1994 as a student group, and has dedicated itself to promoting the tuba and euphonium at a high level. Twisted Steel has performed internationally in a wide variety of venues ranging from church services to full recital competitions. During its brief existence, Twisted Steel has received several awards and honors including winner of the 1997 Southeastern Tuba and Euphonium Conference Quartet Competition, being one of three quartets to be selected to perform and compete at the 1998 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference, Quartet Competition, in Minneapolis, MN, and most recently winner of the 2000 ITEC Quartet Competition in Regina, Canada.
