'PROGMATICS'
-Urban Folk Music Groove from the Finnish Forests -
In a few short years the Progmatics have risen to the elite of
the modern Finnish folk music scene. The group that started in
1993 informally at jam sessions has grown to an official five
man band, whose music injects new rhythms into a traditional yet
innovative Finnish folk music sound, never forgetting the original
jamming spirit.
The original Progmatics trio was comprised of highly active young
veterans from well-known modern Finnish folk music bands; violinist
Perttu Paappanen (Koinurit), accordionist Markku Lepistö (Pirnales)
and keyboard-harmonica player Jouko Kyhälä (Pirnales). In July
1993 during the jam-sessions the trio was joined by Värttinä band
member, "all-star" bouzouki and saxophone player Janne Lappalainen.
The ensuing wild style and freshness of the band's sound established
the quartet beyond jam session status and into a full time working
unit.
In October 1996 Progmatics released their debut album "Vaarallinen
Lehmänkello" (Lethal Cowbell) and the group was selected by the
Finnish folk music magazine, Uusi Kansanmusiikki, as the band
of the year. The record also received positive response from Swedish
folk music magazine, Lira.
During winter 1998 the band picked up the fifth member from the
Finnish pop- and dj -circles, percussionist Zarkus Boussé (Giant
Robots etc.), and the current line-up is eager to make it's mark
in the contemporary folk music arena.
The new Progmatics music kicks new energy into modern folk-dance
music, blending flavors from Finnish fields to African savannas.
Acoustic instruments and electric devices join together into a
natural fusion radiating Progmatics infectious joyful spirit to
all who listen.
